“More engagement” can hide several different business needs: awareness in a new area, suitable enquiries or repeat orders. These needs require different evidence. Meta Blueprint teaches aligning business goals with ad objectives, while Google Analytics organises reports around business objectives. The working method below is our recommendation for choosing a clear target before spending money. It does not promise that selecting an objective will produce a sale.
Write the business outcome in plain language
Name the offer, the customer you can serve, the location and the action you want. Separate the commercial outcome from an intermediate behaviour. Someone opening a service page is not yet an accepted quotation. For a hypothetical maintenance company, the goal might be to generate suitable quotation requests within its service area. State who will answer them and what information makes a request suitable before choosing a metric to represent progress.
Define one primary KPI and its limits
A KPI is a key performance indicator chosen to evaluate progress. Write its definition, source, reporting period and responsible person. If you track cost per suitable enquiry, agree what counts as suitable and record advertising spend for the same period. Mark missing or unclassified conversations separately. Do not rename every incoming message as a qualified lead. Keep diagnostic figures, such as link clicks, available to explain the journey without confusing them with the main outcome.
Check that you can record the outcome
Walk through the enquiry or order process before launch. Confirm where a source is recorded, how duplicate contacts are handled and who updates the final status. Use only the customer information needed for the task. If a website event is untested, describe the tracking as unverified rather than treating a dashboard count as certain. Platform-attributed results and internal sales records may describe different populations or time windows, so keep their definitions visible.
Set a review decision, not a guarantee
Agree a capped test budget and review date. Use prior comparable records where available, otherwise label the starting target as an assumption. Decide which conditions would justify continuing, revising the offer or pausing. A high enquiry count can still be unhelpful if the business cannot fulfil the work. Review service capacity and response quality alongside acquisition figures. A useful KPI helps a real decision; it is not a decorative number selected after the campaign ends.
